Mrs. Garcia's 5th Grade class completed a book project on Melissa Sweet's "Balloons over Broadway"; where they learned about puppeteer Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who is responsible for creating the Macy's Day Parade Balloons. In this unit, students tied together Literacy and STEM by creating their own paper maché character balloons, programming robots to move the balloons, engineering scaffolding that would hold the balloons upright on the robots, and green screen video editing to piece their videos together. Each character in the parade was based on each child's favorite story book character.
